At Canyon Ridge, we support parents and students in a multitude of ways to ensure each child is able to be successful, happy, and safe. Our counselors, nurses, and media director work diligently through Ridge Rocker Rotations every Monday to educate students on how to report bullying, how to be kind, and in building and strengthening positive relationships, developing trust so each student understands that every adult cares and wants to help. We strive to keep each report confidential, and we work diligently to help students learn to have fun without hurting each other, to be kind, and to support each other. Our counselors conduct one on one Minute Meetings, team-building activities, Kindness Weeks, and Mix It Up Lunch events (to assist students in making friendships and avoid forming cliques.)
As administrators, we work with parents, teachers, and groups of students to assist students in correcting their mistakes, educate them in how to treat each other, but also hold them accountable by giving consequences which increase in severity to stop reoccurrences of hurtful behaviors. We implement "Watch It" notices to teachers to assist in being the eyes and ears for our students, advocating for every child in specific ways. We have bully contracts, involve parents, and take steps needed to ensure that hurtful behaviors stop. The key is continued communication from you so we can monitor whether an incident is a one time occurrence or if it is continuing. We take a strong stand against both, but communication is essential to know if we have handled the situation correctly or need continued intervention.
Thank you for entrusting your children to us. We all pledge to protect your children as if they are our own, and to teach students how to learn, play, and compete together in healthy, happy ways. Your communication is key, and we are thankful you report incidents or concerns to our counselors, teachers, staff, and to us as principals. Call anytime, and we can explain steps we take to handle situations and ensure your child is safe and happy. Together we can truly develop and foster a culture of kindness and "heart" for one another.
Very sincerely,
Kathy Blackwell

Helping Your Child Start the School Year Right!
Every parent wants to help their child either continue the success they have had in elementary school or get a fresh start. Every parent wants their child to enjoy school, learn a lot, discover new talents, and be happy and successful. Starting the school year is stressful for both parents and students. Will the teachers be fair, will they be nice, fun, and enjoy every child? Are academic standards both high and realistic in helping each child be successful even if he/she struggles? What about gifted or academically advanced students? Will my child be challenged or bored? Even the most confident child wonders where he/she will eat, with whom, and will they see friends at school. New students wonder if they will make new friends, if they will eat alone or how they will feel all day if they do not know anyone yet. We are here to alleviate those fears and to spend every moment of every day trying to make Canyon Ridge the best school experience your child has ever had.
What we will do: We believe every teacher, every administrator, every custodian, every lunch personnel, every secretary, and every teaching assistant is at Canyon Ridge for a reason. It is to help your child feel welcome, loved, excited about school, capable, and successful... to challenge them, and provide a rigorous outstanding curriculum and education. We will stress kindness and thinking of others as well. We will give our very best every day in and out of the classroom. We will provide engaging, rigorous learning activities, as well as interventions and support when children struggle. We will strive to enjoy, protect, and treat every child as if he/she is our own. We want to instill a love of learning and sense of fun. We will strive to communicate with you every step of the way.
What you can do to help your child:
1. Purchase school supplies before school begins or contact the counselors if you have concerns.
2. Assure your child that this year is going to be positive, fun, and a great year. Be positive, encouraging, and a great advocate for your child. Let us know if your child has any problems during the first days of school or throughout the school year so we can make every effort to help. We are here to help and will ALWAYS care and do all we can to help your child be challenged, successful, healthy, happy, and safe.
3. Attend Schedule Pick Up on August 5th and help your child walk his/her schedule and find his/her classes. Attend Ridge Rally on August 9th if your child is an incoming 5th grader. The Parent Meeting will be helpful for you and the Activities for students will help students make friends. Attend Open House and meet the teachers on August 19. Give your email address to teachers and contact the teachers throughout the school year to ask if your child is caught up or getting behind.
4. Sign up for Parent Portal. This is an online method of following up on students' grades and/or missing assignments. Contact school secretaries for more info 256-6955. Ask teachers questions if you see low or missing assignment grades.
5. Check the school website for your child's teacher pages. Teachers post the assignments for the upcoming week. You can check in once a week for all teachers and ask your child about specific projects and assignments. Important due dates for tests and student projects will be posted there.
6. Establish a school routine. Have family meal time and a reasonable bed time. Monitor that your child goes to sleep early. Rest helps your child be more attentive at school and increases confidence by feeling he/she can tackle any task.
7. Place bookbag, jackets, umbrellas, gloves, scarves, etc., by the front door or in a designated place the night before to avoid stress or forgetfulness in the rush of morning routines.
8. Set a time and quiet place for homework. Often the kitchen table is a good location because a parent can be nearby to help students stay on task or help with any difficulties with homework.
We will do all we can to make this a wonderful school year for your child. We are fortunate to be able to work with students every day. We thank you for entrusting them to us and ask that you let us know any way we can help and support you. Our parents, teachers, and students are the best anywhere, and working together for every child every day is what it is all about.
Very sincerely,
Kathy Blackwell. Principal 256-6955
